My motivation on choosing Hemingway for the blog was the fact that I am a Psychology major here at Farmingdale State College, and I want to study mental illness in the future. Hemingway had a life long battle with depression, which lead to his suicide. So what is depression? Depression is defined as a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest. It is also known as a major depressive disorder or clinical depression. Depression can affect how you feel, think and behave. Depression can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. A person that is diagnosed with depression may struggle with doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes question if they should live their life or not. Depression is not something you can just snap out of, and it is not a weakness. It could require long-term treatment, and depression can be helped with medication and psychotherapy. Depression can have an affect on anyone at any point in their life, like children, teens, and adults. Researchers have found overtime a combination of factors such as: genetics, neurobiological makeup, family history, personality and psychological factors, environment, and social factors within growing up. Depression ran in Hemingway’s family. It is a known fact that seven members of family have died by taking their own lives. The fact that Hemingway was involved with the first world war definitley caused his depression and alcoholism to worsen, as it is seen through some of his most famous works.
